It’s the 10th Anniversary of Art on the Street

Art on the Street is sponsored by U.S. Bank, and it’s main supporters also include Nor’Wood Development Group and G.E. Johnson in conjunction with Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs.    It’s an outdoor art competition and a yearlong exhibition that showcases the work of new as well as celebrated artists.   The theme this year is “City of Sunshine”, which was the official city motto beginning in the early 1900’s.   You can download the entire brochure at http://www.artonthestreets.com/.   There are 14 pieces showcased as well as the brochure maps out an additional 44 pieces; all of which are in the downtown area.

There are many wonderful pieces, but my favorite was ‘Au Soleil” by Bret Price from Orange, California .  It consists of folded rings molded together in a ring   Depending on the time of the day,  the light coming through the hanging ball creates wonderful shadows on the street and the surrounding buildings.

One of my other favorites is “Day Break” by Nicholas Ordahl.   It’s a whimsical piece made up of solar panels, recycled car windshields and LED lights.   It’s located on Pikes Peak Avenue, a little south of the corner of Cascade and Pikes Peak .   The solar panels provide the power for it to light up at night.  Definitely fits with the theme, City of Sunshine!

My other favorite piece of downtown artwork, which isn’t part of the competition, is Humpty Dumpty by Kimber Fibiger.  Every time I see this piece it makes me smile. the expression on Humpty’s face is priceless.   He looks very wise, and his face is pure joy!
