The City of Colorado Springs has a New Home Tree Certificate Program is a wonderful program where you can get a $100.00 tree certificate.

Here’s some of the facts about the Tree Certificate Program

  • The certificate can only be used at a participating nurseries.
  • Tree selection must be one that is “suitable” as a street tree.   Some of the suitable trees are Black Ash, Blue Ash, HedgeMaple, and Chestnut oak.    There is also  info on the web site that includes ornamental and maintenance characteristics of each type of tree as well as a comprehensive list of drought resistant trees to plant in the area.
  • The tree must be planted along the street frontage (i.e. parkway/right-of-way area).
  • You can apply in the spring of 2009 by completing the following steps on the web site.
  • Then and Now

    • Colorado Springs City founder, General William Jackson Palmer could not envision a city without trees.   ld-north-end-trees The city was originally an arid plateau,  completely devoid of trees when established in 1872. The original town site was covered with yucca and other perennial plants and grasses.  Can you imagine how different it looked back then?
    • According to the information on the Colorado Springs web site “Today the Colorado Springs urban forest has grown to more than 99,000 street trees, 18,500 park trees and 6,300 acres of open space and regional park forest areas, all valued at over $100 million dollars.”    Too bad General Jackson Palmer couldn’t see how it looks now.

Healthy trees are considered valuable assets for communities.   They contribute to energy savings, better air and water quality, reduced storm water runoff, carbon storage, and increased property values.   Neighborhood trees also provide aesthetic and recreational values to communities.   Colorado Springs continues to recognize their benefits and continues to promote the Tree Certificate program.  Spread the word!

The wonder is that we can see these trees and not wonder more.
