Since I’m a “wanna-be” athlete, and I’m a statistic “junkie, I love articles like the recent publication in Men’s Fitness Magazine. The article praised Colorado Springs, which is no surprise to those of us who already live in the area.

The ranking information on the web site includes a report card, with A through F rankings. The area was rated an A in some categories, including Geography, Nutrition, Air Quality, and Parks and Open Space. But ………… on the other end of the spectrum there were F ratings for Alcohol Consumption and Access to HealthCare. Our neighbor to the north, Denver, was ranked #4, and also received an F in Alcohol Consumption, as well as they also received a D for Commute and Access to Healthcare.

There was some great trivia information posted on the web site:

  • The number of heavy drinkers here is high: Colorado Springs has 17 percent more than average and the, 7th highest in the survey.
  • Colorado Springs is home to 29 percent more pizza places per capita than the average among cities in our survey.
  • Colorado state law limits or prohibits obesity-related lawsuits against food manufacturers and restaurants.
  • The local commute is much easier than in most cities – 48 percent less oppressive than average, leaving more time to exercise and prepare healthy meals.

Not sure I agree with this statement, have you ever been on I-25 early in the morning? Or tried to get from the West side of town to the east side of town?

  • Air quality here is among the best of any city in the survey, according to EPA air quality standards.
Residents don’t have far to go to get to their local parks:
  • Colorado Springs has 209 municipal parks, among the most of any city on a per capita basis, according to the exclusive survey of municipal park departments.

I totally agree with this statement. Garden of the Gods, the jewel of the park system, is a most amazing place, followed closely by North Cheyenne Canon. Then there’s my other favorite down park, Monument Valley Park.

  • Colorado Springs residents are 95 percent more likely than average to go day hiking. That’s the highest participation rate in the survey.

And, of course, with ratings for the fittest city, there are ratings for the Fattest City. Drum roll please ……………….. Las Vegas receives the honor for the second year in a row; mainly due to poor eating habits. The F’s on their report card included Junk Food, Motivation, and City Recr. Facilities.
