Cheyenne Canon is a heavily wooded park located on the southwest side of Colorado Springs, only minutes from the Broadmoor Hotel. It is close to neighborhoods on the South and West side of town, including the Broadmoor, Old Colorado City, Cheyenne Canon, Crown Mesa, Gold Hill Mesa, and Skyway.
Facts about Cheyenne Canon Park:
- A 1600 acre city park, includes Cheyenne Creek which drops 1,800 feet over the course of 4 miles in a series of cascades and waterfalls.
- It contains picnic areas and hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails.
- It includes the Starsmore Discovery Center at the entrance to the park which is a good stopping point for maps and information on the area, and it also includes interactive exhibits.
- The visitor count is appx. 450,000 people a year.
History Tidbits:
- The Park is named after the Cheyenne Indians, who may have been attracted to the Canon because the waterfalls offer spiritual inspiration to them.
- The citizens of Colorado Springs voted to purchase 640 acres in the Canon from Colorado College to be used as a recreation area in 1885. Then General William Jackson Palmer generously donated 480 acres of upper parkland in 1903.
- The U.S. Forest Service at Pike National Forest planted 700,000 two to four year-old trees to reforest the slopes of the Cañon in 1913. The project only took three months to complete.
- Automobiles were allowed in the park in 1917.
